What recent innovation at Emsur has made you most proud as an industry professional?
Emsur’s growing involvement in circular economy processes together with its clear commitment to sustainability has led it to install its first process solvent recovery (SRU) plant in Madrid.
With the innovative technology implemented, the emission of greenhouse gases (CO2, NOx) will be reduced by more than 5,500tm/year and, in addition, there will be considerable energy savings due to the disconnection of the old volatile element incineration systems that were operating until now.
In this way, Emsur Madrid will be self-sufficient in solvent inputs as it will recover those used in the process and those coming from inks, lacquers and varnishes from its suppliers, even being able to generate a small surplus for sale or other applications.
All this will be produced in an area of only 400m2 which will occupy the industrial footprint of one of the former incinerators of the previous operation and from which urethane grade solvent suitable for high quality printing and lamination will be supplied. In this way, packaging printed or laminated at Emsur will drastically reduce the carbon footprint typical of the conversion process.
How do you see flexible packaging evolving over the next five years and what role will Emsur play in that transformation?
The evolution of flexible packaging in the coming years will be determined by environmental legislation and consumer habits.
In order to accomplish both and to achieve simplified structures and shorter runs with fragmented fabrications, Emsur is actively working on:
Improve the ability to manufacture paper-based complexes with solvent-free adhesives.
Mono-material coatings with functional and barrier properties.
-Technological hybridization of rotogravure/flexo/digital to meet all sectors of demand and even customized micro print runs.
New color protocols adapted for short runs: Extended Color Gamut (ECG) and four-color process. Efficient in-house pre-press work for color reduction and ink supply.
Launch of new, more sustainable and adaptable products for fragmented consumption: die-cut lids in alternative materials to aluminum, stickers…
