Sustainability
Protecting Futures
It is an honor for us to present the Grupo Lantero Sustainability Report 2023. A document that reflects our firm commitment to sustainability and social responsibility, highlighting our efforts and achievements in creating a more balanced and sustainable future for all.
Read the full letter hereWe are firmly committed to sustainability, embodied in three strong strategic pillars, making a significant contribution to the SDGs* and creating a positive impact on people, the planet and on businesses.
(*) The Sustainable Development Goals that were established by the United Nations at its Rio de Janeiro conference in 2012 to address environmental, political and economical urgency.
At Grupo Lantero, people are at the heart of our success.
People are the key to our sustainable success. We are committed to investing in our people, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment and providing opportunities for professional and personal development. We want to create a workplace where our employees can thrive, driving a brighter future for our company and for society at large.
Health and safety at work are two fundamental pillars of our corporate values.
Our approach and actions are based on three lines of action:
People
Industrial Safety
Health and Safety Management System
In 2023, we made significant investments in our production facilities to strengthen our safety standards. Key initiatives includes:
Awareness programme for managers
Regulatory monitoring at all facilities and production lines
Fire safety audits
Improving the accident and incident investigation and management system
Updating the roles and responsibilities of the health and safety team
In addition, we are strengthening the foundations of our Management System by reviewing existing procedures and improving working tools, with the aim of creating a sustainable, robust and shared Safety Culture.
Our talented and dedicated team is our most valuable asset. That’s why we are committed to creating a positive, inclusive and supportive work environment where our employees can thrive, develop their potential and reach their peak performance.
In 2023, we invested 20% more in training than the previous year, reaching a total of 44,165 hours. We offer a wide range of training and development programmes to help our employees acquire the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their current and future performance.
With global sessions where best practices are shared in each functional area and in a cross-cutting manner.
We believe that diversity and inclusion are essential to the success of our business. We foster a work environment where all employees feel valued, respected and listened to, regardless of their origin, age, background, beliefs or ideas.
Our team is made up of enthusiastic and talented people from diverse generations, all united by a shared passion: to drive the success of our company.
Each generation brings a unique and valuable perspective, creating a collaborative and enriching work environment that allows us to approach challenges from different angles and generate innovative ideas.
We are not only committed to incorporating young talent, we are also committed to retaining and incorporating senior talent: 26% of the workforce is over 50 years old and contributes 2674+ to building a bright future for Grupo Lantero.
We promote work-life balance, offering flexibility at work and taking into account the personal circumstances and needs of each employee.
Through strengthening professional relationships between employees, teamwork and promoting recognition.
In 2023, we rolled out the Values campaign to all workplaces. It identified employees who exemplify the company’s core values, thus, becoming role models to inspire their colleagues.
On the occasion of Coexpan’s 50th anniversary and Rodesa’s 25th anniversary, events were organised for employees and their families. These events were an opportunity to reinforce knowledge of the company’s history and values, and to foster togetherness among members of the community.
Workshops and communication campaigns were developed to strengthen the organisational culture, transmitting the company’s values and encouraging their application in day-to-day business.
Committed to the sustainable development of the communities in which we operate.
In 2019 we signed a framework partnership agreement with the Fundación Tomillo. It is our way of channelling our most relevant actions in the social sphere, through a committed Foundation with values very close to those of the Grupo Lantero. This common collaboration framework aims to promote our contribution to building a better society through projects focused on three areas of action: employment, training and social action.

At Grupo Lantero, we are committed to local development and creating opportunities for the communities in which we operate. We promote local employment by hiring local staff and selecting local suppliers who meet our quality and service standards wherever possible.
We believe that local hiring not only benefits communities, but also allows us to have a team that knows and understands the needs of the region. In addition, we support educational and vocational training institutions by offering internships to students. These internships provide valuable work experience and enable students to develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the job market.
All actions carried out by Grupo Lantero are based on respect, professionalism and honesty towards people in order to create value for our stakeholders and to be a company that our employees are proud of.
Some tools that enable our employees to help our business comply with local regulations, as well as globally recognised best practices, are set out in our Code of Ethics and are listed below:
We align our operating model with sustainable development objectives to protect the planet by adopting measures to minimise the impact of our activity.
Environmental management is a fundamental pillar of our business model, and we are working hard to minimise our impact and contribute to a more sustainable future.
We have reduced our CO2 emissions by 11% between 2022 and 2023, which represents a reduction of 4,889 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to taking more than 1,300 cars off the road for one year.
We have international certifications such as ISO 14001:20015, FSC, PECF, Ecovadis, Imprivert, ISCC Plus, UNE-EN-15343, which endorse our commitment to environmental management.
We are working on a review process of all our global banking lines with the respective financial institutions in order to qualify them as sustainable financing. At year-end 2023, we already have 36% of our financing classified as sustainable.
We have the ONE PLANET Platform for environmental management in all our plants.
Thanks to Ecochain Software: we have information on the environmental impacts of our products and with Worldlex: we standardise and improve the identification and assessment of environmental legal requirements.
All these tools together with a multidisciplinary team from the Technical, Quality, Health & Safety and Sustainability areas ensure environmental issues in the Group.
The Group is proud of its achievements in environmental management and we are committed to further improving our performance in this area. We believe that business has an important responsibility in combating climate change and protecting the environment, and we are working to be a leader in this field.
During 2023, we conducted a comprehensive awareness campaign, which included communication and the launch of the Good Practice Manual, shared among all our employees. This manual reiterates the vital importance of each individual action in protecting our planet, providing practical guidelines to promote more sustainable behaviour.
Circularity is the basis on which we work on all developments. Our R&D teams, with the collaboration of the Sustainability team, work closely together to develop materials and structures based on the concept of eco-design. This approach ranges from the origin, using renewable raw materials, bioplastics and recycled materials, to their final destination, ensuring that materials are recyclable and/ or compostable.
As a sign of our commitment to sustainability, we highlight the renewal of the ISCC Plus certification for Coexpan’s plants in Madrid, France and Mexico. This standard certifies the Group’s responsible management of sustainability. Successfully passing the audit and obtaining the certificate allows us to use chemically recycled material (rPS and rPP) from mixed plastic and bio-based material under the mass balance model.
Another important milestone in our sustainability plan in the area of circularity is the new certification in recycled material content. The Coexpan Madrid plant, certified in 2022, will be joined in 2023 by the Coexpan Huelva, Montonate and Germany plants, according to the UNE-EN 15343:2008 standard. This certification, obtained through an external audit, verifies the correct traceability and incorporation of recycled material in the certified products.
It is often better to be well accompanied in order to have a greater impact on circularity. That is why we are present in relevant initiatives such as:
CEFLEX: (Emsur). Consortium of European companies that promotes the circularity of flexible packaging in different working groups.
CHILEAN PLASTICS PACT: (Coexpan). Initiative framed within the global network of the Plastics Pact launched by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
SCS: (Coexpan). It brings together industry players to increase the circularity of styrene polymers.
HOLYGRAIL 2.0: (Innotech). Project to demonstrate the technical feasibility of digital watermarks for the accurate sorting of postconsumer packaging waste in sorting plants.
SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING COALITION: (Coexpan and Emsur). Promotes packaging sustainability by driving circularity throughout the value chain, mainly in North America.
ASPACK: (Estellaprint and Leca Graphics) In the ASPACK Quality Working Group, ASPACK members contribute their experience and knowledge to the development and analysis of quality and environmental projects.
We develop innovative packaging solutions, based on eco-design and optimisation of our own customers’ operations and materials.
We work to increase the circularity of our solutions, improving their recyclability and increasing the use of recycled material, through eco-design as well as our active participation in different collaborative initiatives with the entire value chain.
We develop innovative bio-based packaging solutions through the use of alternative polymers, prioritising materials derived from biological resources. Some of these products are also biodegradable or compostable after use.
Optimisation of materials through innovation and more efficient processes: we work to achieve lighter, thinner packaging, always with optimum quality materials that continue to guarantee the efficiency and safety of the product.
We are committed to developing optimal packaging that ensures longer shelf life, product protection to reduce product waste, while maintaining food properties during manufacture, distribution and display.
Substitution of materials with a higher carbon footprint, e.g. aluminium, metal or glass.
We are committed to improving our performance every day, enhancing our credibility and transparency with all stakeholders. The best way to demonstrate this is through the demanding third-party certifications we have obtained in some key areas.
Our commitment to the planet and the environment is clearly reflected in the annual increase in the number of plants certified under ISO 14001 or similar standards. We have the ambition to certify all plants in the medium term, in the process of continuous improvement of operations.
The integration of the principles of corporate social responsibility in day-to-day business is the key to implementing the global sustainability plan. Assessment of compliance with these principles is carried out at the Group’s various plants through recognised platforms such as SEDEX and ECOVADIS.
Food Safety is critical to some of the sectors in which we operate. The solutions we offer must perform their function with the highest quality. That is why all plants producing food contact materials are BRC and/or FSSC 22000 certified.
Our commitment to protecting the planet also includes certifications that ensure that wood-based products come from responsible managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits.
The globally applicable sustainability certification system, ISCC PLUS, assesses all sustainable raw materials, circular and bio-based materials and renewable energies. This certification is an important recognition of the group’s commitment to sustainability, specifically in terms of circularity, recycling and environmental management. It will also allow the use of recycled material (rPS and rPP) from mixed plastic and bio-based material under the mass balance model.
We believe in Open Innovation as the most solid way to advance towards the best packaging solutions. And for this we have an exceptional centre, Innotech, which, in its fourth year of life has already yielded very significant results.
