SUSTAINABILITY

PPWR: Mandatory incorporation of recycled material in plastic packaging. Chapter II ‘Sustainability requirements’ Article 7

From 1 January 2030, plastic packaging or the plastic component of packaging must incorporate a minimum percentage of recycled materials obtained from plastic waste.

The percentages are specified in the PPWR , for 2030, as follows:

Relevancia del reciclaje de plásticos PET y su impacto ambiental en la sostenibilidad.

For contact-sensitive packaging made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as the main component.

Vestido rosa con patrón de lunares blancos, ideal para eventos informales y primavera.

For beverage bottles (volume less than 3 litres)

Recycling symbol and jar with purple liquid, emphasizing eco-friendly nature.

For contact-sensitive packaging made of plastic materials other than PET, except for single-use plastic beverage bottles

Recycling symbol with a 35% label in purple, indicating recycling rate or percentage.

Other plastic packaging not covered above

Encontrar una caja de primeros auxilios con símbolos médicos en un ambiente de oficina.

Compostable materials, medicinal products and medical devices, no recycled material required

From 2040, the minimum percentage of recycled content derived from the recovery of plastic waste rises to 50%, with the exception of single-use plastic bottles, for which the requirement is set at 65%.

Although these requirements are initially limited to European requirements, it is expected that multinational groups will gradually incorporate them into all their product portfolios globally, due to the large benefit of incorporating recycled material into their carbon footprint.

New Royal Decree 140/2025 Carbon Footprint, which affects all plants. A new royal decree has just been published in Spain that will come into force on 12 June 2025 and by which companies such as Grupo Lantero will have to face different obligations.

    1. Calculation of the carbon footprint:
      • They shall calculate their organisation’s carbon footprint annually.
      • They shall use the emission factors published by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
    2. Development of a reduction plan:
      • Companies must draw up a greenhouse gas emission reduction plan 1.
      • This plan should include a quantified reduction target over a time horizon of at least five years, together with measures to achieve it.
      • The plan must be compatible with the transition to a sustainable economy and be in line with the Paris Agreement and the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
    3. Publication of information:
      • Companies must make information on their carbon footprint and reduction plan available to the public free of charge and accessible on their website.
      • Companies shall comply with this obligation by including the legally required information in the corresponding sustainability report.

These obligations seek to improve the transparency and environmental responsibility of companies, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and compliance with international commitments on climate change.

It is very important to highlight that, although it is a Spanish law, the carbon footprint must be calculated for the entire organisation, with information from all plants in all countries, as well as proposing measures at a global level. Therefore, the entire Group and its activity is within the regulatory scope and must be involved in achieving the objectives of the reduction plan.

DID YOU KNOW?

Apertura y sonidoThe sound of opening a package influences the perception of product quality.

The famous ‘clack’ when opening a lid, or the ‘pop’ of a seal, are not just sounds: they trigger sensations of freshness, safety and quality. Sensory packaging design is a growing field and proves that even what you hear… communicates. In such a competitive market, every detail counts.
Sabias que QR 1QR codes are back in packaging because of the pandemic. Although they were invented in the 1990s, it wasn’t until COVID that their use exploded: digital menus, contactless tickets… and also packaging. Today, QRs in packaging are key tools for traceability, access to product information, interactive campaigns and much more. A trend that is here to stay and connect.
